While the new changes haven’t improved the new Fortuner - which shares the Toyota Hilux’s IMV platform and ladder frame chassis - the new bonnet lines add a sense of power to the front of the Toyota Hilux. The lines flow through to the horizontal slatted grille.
In profile, new overfenders feature on the Raider versions while new side mirrors with integrated side turn indicators appear on both the Raider and SRX spec levels along with new six spoke wheel designs for the 15-inch steel wheel caps and 17-inch alloy wheels on higher specification models.
While the chrome and black trim inserts in the interior of the new Fortuner don’t really work with its grey and tan two tone interior,Toyota Hilux’s double and xtra cab variants, the darker, more practical grey and black interior trim isn’t as offensive, while the cloth trim and stiching in the SRX variants has also been improved. In addition to the Optitron instrumentation, USB jack and iPod connectivity, the Raider models now feature Bluetooth, a touch screen information display and CD sound system with six speakers and steering mounted controls.
There remains the 2.7 litre and 4 litre V6 petrol engines plus the 126kW, 3 litre turbo-diesel and choice of manual or automatic transmissions. There's new audio systems and towing capacity on four-wheel drives is 2.5 tonnes, up from 2250kg.But it's the flagship four-wheel drive SR5 models which score the most bling, ranging from dusk-sensing headlights to LCD touch screen and satellite navigation, Bluetooth streaming and silver highlights across the dashboard.
The SR5 Double Cab adds privacy side and rear glass, 17-inch alloy wheels and a restyled sports bar.
With the new sheet metal up front, plus fender flares for SR models, the Toyota Hilux style is fresher and a little less gawky than its predecessor.Extra touches, including steering-wheel mounted audio and telephone controls plus satellite navigation for SR5s, further the more carlike interior this time around.
To date, the world’s favourite pick-up has recorded cumulative global sales of over 13 million units.
Faced with temperatures as low as -56oC and altitudes of over 3,400 m, the Toyota Hilux recorded a lower fuel consumption and higher average speed than any equivalent Antarctic vehicle.
The 2012 Toyota Hilux features a new, sophisticated exterior design, refined interior quality with improved levels of standard equipment and a new, expanded, four grade line-up available in Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab body styles.
The 2012 Toyota Hilux features extensive revisions to both its interior and exterior design. The upper part incorporates Toyota Touch, a 6.1” touch screen multimedia unit. The lower part houses new designs for both manual and automatic air-conditioning controls.
A new, more modern steering wheel design incorporates grade-differentiated switchgear.A new front bumper design incorporates a large air intake flanked by integrated fog lamp housing.
In profile, the 2012 Toyota Hilux’s clean, robust bodywork is enhanced by a new front and rear wing design which incorporates a strong, rearward-flowing character line adding a powerful sense of movement. Upgrading the system to Touch & Go equips the 2012 Toyota Hiluxwith the best value-for-money navigation system on the market.
Through the introduction of variable nozzle turbocharging, 2012 Toyota Hilux 2WD, 2.5 D-4D models now benefit from a 24 hp increase in power. A high-performance turbo-intercooler not only increases power but also enhances emissions performance. A sophisticated Swirl Control System optimises the air-fuel mixture at low engine speeds, increasing torque availability without the need for acceleration. And an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler optimises EGR gas temperature to improve emissions performance.
This not only improves vehicle ground clearance, but also increases the two-wheel drive models’ towing capacity to 2.5 tons.
Equipped with an optional, 5-speed automatic gearbox, the unit’s maximum torque rises to an impressive 360 Nm from 1,400 to 3,200 rpm.
This superior control and high torque output allows the 2012 Toyota Hilux to climb steep slopes on engine idle only with equal ease.
Both units benefit from high torque output across a wide engine speed range -the 2.5 D-4D generating 343 Nm between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm, manual versions of the 3.0 litre engine matching this figure between an even wider, 1,400-3,400 rpm band- offering optimum performance at any speed, across any terrain.
